Favorite Haikus and Tankas by Sonia Sanchez
haiku
let me be your flute
fashioning laughter from this
bamboo wilderness
haiku
my body waiting
for the sound of yo/hands is loud
as a prairie song.
haiku
at the center of
me, you, holyman walking
in lighting colors.
short poem for us slick ones...
the
arabs ain't got no/
thing on
our oil.
haiku
the trees are laughing
at us. positioning their
leaves in morning smiles.
haiku
these autumn trees sit
cruel as we pretend to eat
this morning goodbye.
haiku
i'm in the middle
of your thighs squeezing us from
ancient palaces.
tanka
cause we are carving
out silhouettes on the
hips of yesterday
women parading children
in tongues of manhood.
tanka
how can you comfort
me? i need the caress of
centuries. the taste
of ancestors riding their
legs in civilization.
